The first licensed premises opened in Svinøya in 1831. Then as now, Svinøya was a small, vibrant fishing village on an island in Svolvær Harbour. These days, however, it has a bridge providing a quick route to the town of Svolvær.
The fishermen’s shacks are idyllically located among the place where fish is brought ashore, wharves, drying racks and old, traditional buildings in the local style – not to mention the open sea on the one side and the dramatic Lofoten mountains on the other.
Our restaurant, Børsen Spiseri, situated on the merchants’ wharf dating from 1828, is the most highly regarded on Lofoten, with dried fish a speciality. Krambua, which was Svolvær’s first shop, is also on the same wharf, and is now our reception.
Fishing has always been the basis of existence for the people here, and the fisheries remain important to the area. Having the opportunity to study this way of life at close hand on Svinøya is an experience in itself. Enjoy high-quality accommodation at the heart of Lofoten.
