Why should guests visit your region and hotel this summer?
- Bårdshaug Herregård is located in the small town of Orkanger in Orkland municipality, a well-known trading centre and a natural starting point for exploring Trøndelag. You are close to Trondheim, the weather-beaten islands along the coast, and several important historical sites.
We offer a manor-style stay in a historic building dating back to the early 1900s, as well as cultural heritage experiences in The Norway Building, originally Norway’s contribution to the World’s Fair in Chicago in 1893.
Arrive to a three-course dinner at our restaurant, Restaurant Ministeren, featuring ingredients from Trøndelag. After a good night’s sleep, enjoy a generous breakfast before setting off with a packed lunch and thermos.
A recommended day trip is Løkken Verk, where you can experience the Thamshavn Railway, the Orkla Industrial Museum, and the Old Mine.
From here, it is easy to continue to Trondheim, the islands of Hitra and Frøya, or Inderøy and the Golden Road. The possibilities are many when Bårdshaug Herregård is your base.
What is your favourite place in the region?
- A place where you are fully present and use all your senses. A slightly unconventional tip, but very much me: find your favourite restaurant chair at one of Trondheim and Trøndelag’s many excellent restaurants.
Sit beside or across from someone you care about, and enjoy Trøndelag hospitality with local ingredients and good conversation. For me, that is one of the best ways to experience the region.
What is your favourite activity or experience?
- I strongly recommend salmon fishing in the Orkla River, one of Norway’s best salmon rivers. The nature, the silence, the calm, and the anticipation make for a deeply rewarding experience over one or more days by the riverbank.
Any hiking tips?
- Explore Trollheimen. Even if you do not find the highest peaks there, you will find some of Norway’s most beautiful landscapes.
Omnfjellet in Orkland offers 360-degree views over Trollheimen, the coast near Aure, and Trondheim in the distance.
Take the Gråkallbanen tram in Trondheim up to Lian. From there, hike to Geitfjellet and Våttakammen. Enjoy views over Ila, Midtbyen, and the Trondheimsfjord with Munkholmen.
What local speciality should guests try?
- Langoustine from the Trondheimsfjord and some of the world’s best strawberries from Landrø in Lensvik. Pair it with sparkling cider from Inderøy Mosteri.
I also believe the world would be a slightly better place if more people discovered the joy of locally produced cheese.
Try a blue cheese from Orkladal or Grindal Ysteri, ideally paired in a slightly unconventional way with Lysholm Linie Double Cask Sherry/Port. Both dairies also have self-service farm shops that are well worth a visit.
