Surrounded by mighty mountains and waterfalls

The village of Flåm is tucked away on the innermost reaches of Norway's longest fjord. Every year, hundreds of thousands of people travel from half way around the world to visit this delightful spot in West Norway.

Many roads lead to Flåm, including the most beautiful cycling route in Norway, Rallarvegen. This starts in Haugastøl or Finse, and for many ends in the gardens of Fretheim Hotel in Flåm, enjoying an ice-cold local brew from Ægir brewery.

Flåm can offer unique experiences. The boat trip from Flåm along the Aurlandsfjord and into the beautiful, practically unspoilt Nærøyfjord is magnificent. The Flåm railway – one of the steepest stretches of railway in the world – starts at the fjord and winds its way through spectacular scenery up Flåmsdalen valley to a height of 900 metres. In 2014, Lonely Planet named Flåmsbanen railway the best train journey in the world.

You can set off from Flåm in a kayak on the fjord waters, surrounded by precipitous mountains down which magnificent waterfalls thunder. It is not unusual to see eagles, otters, seals or porpoise. There are also plenty of charming cycling or hiking routes in the Flåm valley or the adjacent and charmingly wild Aurlandsdalen valley.

After a day of hiking or cycling, what better way to relax than by dipping your feet in the fjord and taking in the sights surrounding you. These are sights that will stay with you for a long time.
