Unesco world heritage town

Røros is definitely a destination for everyone’s “bucket list”. The beautiful old mining town on the Røros mountain plain has now been included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Every year, visitors fall in love with Røros and we are sure you will too.

The town was founded in 1644 when the first copper vein was found in the area. Røros has been an important mining town for Norway. Although the last mine closed in 1978, Røros still has a population of around 4,000.

Who would ever want to leave such a delightful place? The locals have created a modern, vital community in this old mining town 628 metres above sea level and in the midst of the protected World Heritage Site. The ancient wooden buildings in the town have all been properly preserved. All that is genuine and authentic in Røros is made all the more charming as the local inhabitants have lovingly preserved the town’s history yet still live, work and have shops and workshops in the old 17th century buildings.

The combination of 333 years of mining history and creative souls who are proud of their town's roots has created a unique place on the mountain plain – and a unique destination.

Røros has so much more to offer than its history. Tour the picturesque town on a horse-pulled sleigh with lit torches and jingling bells. Race over the mountain plain on a sleigh pulled by well-trained dogs, holding tightly on to your hat as the wind brings tears to your eyes. Let your feet follow paths and trails through sheltered birch forest and over heather-clad mountains, or set off on a skiing trip through wonderful winter landscapes. After so much activity, you are bound to be hungry and Røros will not disappoint you. The town has an impressive variety of delicious local produce to serve, and you will soon find that an evening meal turns into a unique experience.

Røros was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1980. When are you planning to visit?
