A trip through the region’s nature, culture and history

The trips starts along lake Vråvatn and continues through forests and small villages. Just before we reach Dalen we will make a stop at Grimdalstunet.

Grimdalen is the birth place and childhood home of sculptor Anne Grimdalen – known for her work decorating Oslo Town Hall. Today Grimdalen is a protected historic farm with buildings from the Middle Ages and a building with sculptures made by Anne Grimdalen. Every summer there is an exhibition with well known artists here. The museum can also offer a café.

An alternative stopping place is Åmdals Verk mines, an interesting mining museum based on copper mining from 1540 to 1945.

From there, continue to Dalen, situated 72 meters above sea level and the ending point for the Telemark Canal. Here you will also find the old historic hotel, Hotel Dalen, worth a visit.

From Dalen continue on to Vest-Telemark Museum at Eidsborg. This is an outdoor museum showing long traditions in folk art and hand craft.

Here you will also find Eidsborg stave church. The smallest of the remaining stave churches in Norway. A guided tour here will tell the story about the church’s history and its significance in the area.

From Eidsborg continue east towards Morgedal, “The cradle of modern skiiing”. Visit the Norwegian skimuseum that tells the story of modern skiing through pictures, exhibitions and film. The museum has a souvenir shop and café.

From Morgedal go back to Vrådal through Kviteseid. A stop at Kviteseid local history museum in recommended.

Straand Hotel is also a good starting point for trips to the heavy water plant at Vemork or the mountain plateau of mount Gaustad as well as the coast of Telemark.
