THE IBSEN MUSEUM IN GRIMSTAD Norway’s oldest Ibsen Museum (founded in 1916) with the old chemists where Ibsen completed his apprenticeship (1844-50). This is where he started writing. A fascinating and informative exhibition portraying a rather different history of the famous poet. Also a separate exhibition dedicated to the poem “Terje Vigen”. www.grimstadbysmuseer.no

GRIMSTAD SEAFARING MUSEUM One of three preserved sailing shipyards in Norway. Located in the ”old office”- the administration building for the old shipyard, founded 1841. Fascinating insight into the heyday of sailing ships in Norway. www.grimstadbysmuseer.no

NORWEGIAN HORTICULTURAL MUSEUM Among the exhibits are the new exhibit on Knut Hamsun as a farmer, Fuhr’s wine production, bee-keeping and geology. Large, well-kept garden with over 1000 different plants. A number of burial mounds in the park at Dømmesmoen. www.grimstadbysmuseer.no


GRIMSTAD CHURCH Norway’s second largest wooden church, built in 1881. Beautiful views of the harbour and islands. War memorial in the park – Mother Norway – sculpted by Ståle Kyllingstad. www.grimstad.net

FJÆRE CHURCH Stone church from the mid 12th century. Has grown together with the village and community, and is at the centre of Fjære history, from the Middle Ages to present day. Well-preserved building, with a number of interesting stories and finds. 3 km east of Grimstad. www.grimstad.net

NØGNE Ø (THE NAKED EYE) BREWERY
Det Kompromiss-løse Bryggeri A/S Micro-brewery in the old power station – Norway’s largest supplier of bottle-matured, unpasturised and unfiltered live beer. Beer with a great variety and depth. Beer which makes demands on the drinker – the way you serve it, your level of concentration, how open-minded you can be and your level of insight. The people at the Grimstad brewery are proud of their beer!

NØRHOLM Knut Hamsun purchased Nørholm farm in 1918 at the registry office for three kroner. He lived there until his death in 1952. Not open to the public, but well worth stopping for a look from the road. www.grimstadbysmuseer.no .

AGDER THEATRE – FJÆREHEIA
 A theatre located in a stone quarry! The old quarry was mined for the characteristic red coastal granite, but since 1993 has been the stage for performances of both Ibsen’s works and modern rock musicals. Seats around 1000. www.agderteater.no
