The autumn heralds the arrival of the herring, closely followed by the killer whales or orca. In Lofoten, you can get up close to these fascinating animals. You can even go snorkelling alongside them if you are brave enough. October to January. www.orca.tysfjord.no
A skiing holiday in the high mountains is a real adventure. Skiing in Lofoten is more than that, made unique by the views of the sea 1000 metres directly below you. There are plenty of waymarked and groomed cross-country trails, and demanding trips with extreme descents throughout the area. www.lofoten-aktiv.no
Indoor activities
Lofoten has welcomed artists from as far back as the Norwegian golden age at the end of the 19th century. Christian Krogh became quite obsessed with the lighting in Lofoten and has travelled here year after year to capture the landscape on canvas. Several galleries throughout the area have exhibitions of both classical and contemporary pictorial art.
